Our kick-off event of 2020 brings Crissy Van Meter to Detroit to discuss her debut novel, Creatures. It is a father-daughter story (sorely overlooked in fiction!), a love story, a meditation on forgiveness and an interrogation of memory.

“An unwavering triumph.”
New York Times Review of Books

Our founder, Amy, fell in love with the book from the moment she saw the cover.

“When I finished, I was bereft not to be immersed in the world of Creatures. This one is gorgeous and lyrical and washes over you and then departs like the tides.”

Since then she’s been dreaming of one magical night featuring:

FAQ
Do I Need to Have Read the Book?
No! That is not a requirement. This is a conversation with the writer about her life, her writing and the book. In fact, we hope you get your book at the event and can then go home and read it after hearing from Crissy. We love how knowing the author can change people’s relationship to the page.

What Is The Free Book Discussion? We are introducing a book club event that is free and open to the public to discuss Creatures. It will be held on April 28 at The Congregation, the new cafe and bar in Detroit’s Boston-Edison neighborhood. So after you’ve met Crissy, come and talk about the book with others who loved it!

Is There Parking? Yes, there is plenty of parking outside the Aquarium, which is located at the center of Belle Isle. But you do need a state of Michigan Recreation Passport to drive onto the island. They are $11 for the year and are good at all Michigan State Parks.

When Will I Get My Tickets: We will email your tickets at least 24 hours in advance of the event. No need to print them out. Just bring them on your phone!

When Should I Arrive? The event begins at 6:30 p.m., but the reading and conversation with Crissy is not scheduled to start until around 7:30 p.m. So there’s no need to be early or rush. If you’re running late, it just cuts into your cocktail hour (horror!) not the performance.

What Should I Wear? This is a strolling dinner, with seating for the performance. So be cute, be stylish, but don’t feel like your need to wear your highest heels :-)

Eligibility: Everyone is welcome, including men. But this is not designed for minors. If you’re hoping to bring someone under the age of 21, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate him or her.

Media Disclaimer: Photographs and/or video will be taken during the event, and we use those images on our social media channels and website. You understand that, by attending, we may use your likeness as we see fit.

Cancellations & Refunds: We are unable to issue refunds, but are happy to transfer your ticket.

More questions? Great. We’d love to hear from you. Email hello@shadyladiesliterarysociety.com
